We're sadists aren't we? I'm with you though, please rain, especially on race day!

Some snow would be good too.

The footage from last year, with the Australian weather, could have been used by Al Gore as a sequel to his global warming film.

    Cheers, Andy
  • BBC Weather forecasts a great big cloud of rain over the area on sunday, so hopefully we'll get a proper 'hell of the north'.

I do hope it's not like 2005 though. I remember they had some pretty big storms on the days leading up to the sunday and apart from a little sprinkle, it turned out to be a dry edition.

Hope it's like 1994 when Tchmil won - rain and mud galore!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I'm watching the 2001 edition at the mo and that wasn't the rainiest of days, it just rai we in the week leading up. Yet at the end the riders resembled several puddles spinning their legs!

A pity we'll only get 30 minutes' worth on TV then, eh?

    A small appetiser from youtube.

This is Hinault winning in 1981. He hated the race and considered in an anachronism but recognised that if he wanted to be considered a true champion he had to win it. So he turned up in 1981 wearing the rainbow jersey and won it. I don't think he ever rode it again.

Just checked on the Eurosport website and they don't seem to be streaming live video with English commentary- anyone checked if they're running it in Belgium, France or Germany?

That was a bloody great sprint by the Badger. He's leading with 250 to go and he tries to defend anyone coming over his right shoulder so the guy comes up his inside and then he puts another spurt on with 125m to go. And then he looks like he's being overhauled for the line and seems to accelerate a third time.

    Impressionnant!

What do we get instead? Are the European Curling Championships coming to a scintilating finale or did Eurosport manage to scoop 10 hours live coverage of the Bangkok Tiddlywinks Open?

It was more of a comment than a question. :)

So they are supposedly showing the last hour live - will the race be finished by 16:30cet?
I'm thinking maybe just if the conditions are not too horrendous.

    Another classic moment:

After all the years of falling short (or just falling into ditches etc) I'd quite like to see him finally triumph.

I have no faith in Eurosports TV scheduling, that's why I'd rather hook my PC to my TV and watch the streaming version - 60 minutes of coverage means we won't get to see Arenberg, Orchies and probably not Carrefour - bizzarely, we get a repeat of the morning's London marathon instead - which has been live in the morning and covered by the BEEB and Eurosport. Eurosport UK's attitude to cycling fans is contemptable.

  • Is a dollar credit card with a US address - which I have - all that's needed to get onto Cycling.tv to see it or do you have to go through a proxy to pretend you've got a US IP address too, does anyone know?

Is it just me, or does that Bontrager wheel look like a rebadged Campag Bora?

He rode it at least one more year - see the photo about half way down the page of BH in the '82 edition:

In much the same way that history has altered to make Hampsten the winner of the Gavia stage in the Giro, the Hinault legend is now that he only rode it once, won it and never rode it again. I think he may have actually ridden it 3 or 4 times.

It is indeed a bloody joke. I don't know why British Eurosport bother. The reason I single them out is as I remember being able to watch most of the race on German Eurosport last year, which the British version ignored for motorcycling instead.
  • I don't know why everyone gets their "knickers in a twist" over Eurosh**s Cycling
coverage, they have been doing it for years.

If it's not MotoGP and the Spring Classics, it's French Open Tennis and the Giro, and so on. I read recently that one of the Eurosport Bigwigs has major intrests in all things Motorcycle, therefore it will always get priorty,

  • I'm not too sure we'll see any rain tomorrow, looking at the forecasts now. They all predict light rain, with all the heavy rain on monday and beyond. Ah well, might still be a good race.
  • I've just set up my £60 Lidl satellite system to get France 2 coverage. Managed to get a perfect picture today. I hope that Eurosport will do streaming audio for the whole race.

Coverage from 1330 to 1740 cet excellent. :D

There is also the matter of Motorcycle racing having a much bigger audience in the UK for advertising.

Have always found some of the advertisers on Eurosport surprising, Lear Jet advertising during F1, never seen that on ITV.
