Gear change problems

Running an 8 sp setup on my GT with a Shimano Deore LX M571 rear mech and Acera brake/shifter combo.
All was fine until a few days ago but now the right hand gear shifter keeps failing to move the gears up or own with a single click. I've reset the gears at the rear derailleur a number of times but it still sometimes takes 2 or 3 clicks on the shifter before the gears grudgingly change.
Is it likely that the shifter itself is at fault?

hmm, grubby or loose rear mech, gunged up shifter pod, muddy cables. Either that, or damaged parts are the things I've seen to cause this problem (assuming that they're set up right.)0

if the shifters are actually clicking then it sounds like they are working ok.
Sounds like (as mentioned) the mech is gunged up or the cables are gunked up.
Try degreasing the rear mech (take the rear wheel off first) and the relube and check all of the wire runs to make sure they are clear. The rear noodle is often the problem. With the wheel on get the chain into the biggest sprocket (closest to the spokes) and then with everything stationary - click the gears down into the smallest sprocket (away from the spokes). make sure the wheel isnt moving so the mech doesnt move and this will release all the tension in the mech cable (if you have those weird gears where the tension is the reverse then this woule be the other way round) - you can then unhook the noodle and move it up and down the cable. You should be able to check it is clean. Run some gt85 up it as best is possible.
gear probs are such a pain in the ass. good luck getting it sorted.0
