Got a few rapha bits and looking to get one of their winter jerseys. I know it's the wrong time of year but maybe they will be putting it in the sale so could get it a bit cheaper.

Anyway the bit that worries me is there is no mention of it being windproof. Does anyone own one? Is it windproof?

I've got one. It's not windproof in the sense that it doesn't have any modern windproofing fabric in it but wool generally is pretty good at keeping out the wind so I'm not sure it needs it. I tend to wear it on dry, cold, sunny days and it's been superb - one of my favourite bits of clothing in fact.
  • how cold do you wear it? Do you ever feel it could do with a gilet over the top?

I've ridden to work wearing it when the temperature wasn't much above freezing and been warm enough. It's very warming (if that makes sense) so I've never felt the need to wear a gilet with it.

I've used it with/without gilet subject to weather. It's a nice bit of kit (over-priced of course!) especially when used with one of their base layers ,either long or short sleeve. If it was really cold,I'd go for the Assos 851 jkt.

  • can we feel the cold wind hitting your chest then if you feel the need for a gillet?

Yes, depnding on the severity of the cold/wind and if there is any rain in the equation

I feel the wind on my arms when I wear mine but it's more breathable than my windproof jersey. I just wear a thicker baselayer if it's colder.
  • hmmmm bit unsure now. just a bit hesitant cos bought a solo equipe jersey at Christmas wich never claimed to be wind block but wind resistant.

In use anything colder than 11ish degrees requires a gilet over the top. Meaning that it's only really good for spring/autumn. Obviously I want to be able to use the rapha one year round as I'm looking to replace my old altura winter jacket.

The softshell jacket is the windproof version.

I have one and have used it through out the winter, with a base layer. Used it today and if the weather stays the same I will ditch the base layer. Great piece of kit and does not stink after a good sweat.

are you just 'hoping' that it will go on sale soon or do you know that it will?

Given that they are down to three sizes in stock I doubt they'll be dropping the price any time soon.

Good bit of kit. Was wearing mine commuting this week with a base layer underneath and a jacket for the first few miles. Any warmer and it'll get tucked away til next year.

As above, to make it windproof you need to put some kind of shell jacket on top.

Like most Rapha stuff, expensive, but, as usual, very well made and so lasts longer. Mine's at the end of it's second season of much use and still looks about the same as when I bought it.
  • thanks for all the help guys but it doesn't really sound like the kind of jacket you could wear all winter when it's very cold out there due to the lack of windproofing. shame as it does look good

Like Kléber says, there's also the Lightweight Softshell for the same price...
I ordered one the other day, hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow!

Why not get the standard softshell which is a great bit of kit (but expensive!). Works well with a good base layer in winter, the a short-sleeved/sleeveless one if the weather iproves
