Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on a pair of the 2008 specialized road shoes in black? I don't care if I have to get them from the US or Europe but I can't find a supplier on the net.

I got a pair of the flo orange ones from these guys, looking at the ad they do stock the black/silver ones, I found them very helpful and the delivery only took about a week.

You could always try hassling Specialized UK (as I already have). If enough of us do, they might decide there is demand and bring them in.

I actually found several suppliers on the net when I googled - the trick for european ones is to specify german (or French / Italian) language in the advanced options on google. Not tried buying yet (waiting in the hope the exchange rate might improve, and also still hoping to find some white ones in my size to try on first - not about to start feeling guilty about trying on with no intention of buying when it's all SUK's fault I can't spend my money in the LBS anyway), so can't recommend anywhere specific. Was just about to point you at the multitude of recent threads on this over at weight weenies (at least one US supplier listed in a thread there), but I see you're already there!

i like lots of specialised products, but i cannot get my head round why they don't sell 1/2 sizes in the UK. fit for cycling shoes is very important ... full size jumps are just too much and given specialised's brand strategy is around designing the most ergonomic equipment it is bizarre

That's because there is a difference between Specialized and Specialized UK. The former are very much into ergonomics, fit and choice; the latter don't seem to care as long as they're making money.

i don't know about that - my experience is that they are extremely helpful!

i still don't understand the 1/2 size thing right enough

The staff might be helpful, but they're making commercial (rather than customer driven) decisions about what they stock - arguably that's perfectly reasonable for a commercial company!
