Braking Performance

After several months of commuting my brakes were so poor cycling in the rain was scary. When I changed the blocks I found flecks of metal which had scored the rims. Apparently this isn't unusual after a lot of hilly cycling (and braking) in the wet. Changing the blocks and making sure that the rims are clean has improved braking a bit but it's still not good. Are my rims beyond hope or is there anything that I can do to get a good braking surface again?

Take them to your LBS and see what they say, although they'll probably try and sell new a new pair regardless. I did the same to one of my rims and it was fine until I crashed and wrecked it so it got changed before I noticed a difference.
    It's all good.

change the pads - I have the koolstop salmon coloured pads on my bikes now - they are excellent - a marked imnprovement in stopping power and control.

they don't pick up the metal shards either so won't be quite as abrasive on your wheel rims!
