Late 80's retro project recommendations please

I having been watching dvds of the tour de france in the late 80s and early 90s with riders such as Fignon, Indurain, LeMond, Miller, Delgardo, Hampsten, Armstrong etc. I remember watching these riders at the time as a teenager and have fond memories courtesy of Channel 4 coverage. Now, after having owned a modern steel frame, swapped to aluminium and now to carbon fibre I fancy putting together a "retro" racer similar in spec to those I've been watching from the late 80s. If you were doing the same what would be your chosen spec, starting with frame and then any other hitoricaly accurate components you would recommend.

thanks

I'd recommend any decent Italian frame with Record/Croce D'Aune or Chorus, Open Pros, Cinelli bars and stem and a Rolls or Regal saddle and Mavic rims.

Late 80s Shimano will probably be quite difficult to find.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano

2 choices - classic Italian steel with Campagnolo Record, Delta brakes etc, or something like a Vitus 996 with Mavic SSC gruppo. My choice would be something like a Daccordi or Concorde steel frame in Columbus SLX, plenty of chrome to polish too. You might be lucky to find a whole bike in the classifieds somewhere or venture onto ebay. Careful on your component choices - some of the prices for components can be stratospheric - something like a Cinelli Voltare or Regal Gerardi saddle in perforated white leather.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Cheapest and easiest option would be 531c frame (loads available to get repainted) and shimano dura ace or 600ax. I have seen plenty of new old stock on ebay for this type of thing, much better than second hand.
I actually sold a pair of 600ax with gp4 riims with spare hubs. I also sold the 600ax brakes. They were/are as good as any new brakes I have used.

I've built a late 80's low profile bike with:

Harry Hall 531pro frame + 24" front wheel
    Dura-ace 7400 series components
    Mavic Comete +/- disc wheel
    Mavic lo-pro bars
    Rolls saddle

    all off eBay.

The stuff is all there if you look hard and are patient - one of the best places for older Shimano stuff is eBay Germany, though the disc wheel came via eBay France.

If I could have my dream spec, it would be the Raleigh lo-pro Fignon rode in '89, with C-Record, Delta, Ghibli front and rear discs or, even better, the Campag Scirocco front wheel - the disc with four holes... drool...

By the way, if anybody could point me in the direction of one of those Scirocco discs, I would be forever grateful!
I was only joking when I said
by rights you should be bludgeoned in your bed

Complete bike rather than a project, but pretty sweet if it fit you (not me selling it by the way!)(
  • Hi there.

There's a new old-stock 1991 ciocc in a size 54 for sale in the small ads of this week's comic for £190. Lovely looking frame.

    Cheers, Andy

The linked Pinarello is pretty nice - as lack of bids shows probably over-priced! A complete bike is best VFM route for sure - even if a few bits need changing. Other than the Colnagos and de Rosas, little with d/t shifters will make over 250 quid. A beautiful NOS Daccordi frameset made 286 quid last week on th'bay.
