I am running a 9 speed 105 setup but need to replace my levers. I am wondering if I bought a 10 speed lever with a view to upgrading the whole transmission at a later date to 10 speed whether this would work with my current 9 speed. My idea is to limit the travel on the derailier with the adjusting screws. Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It won't work. The amount of cable pulled per shift is different on 9 and 10 speed, and fiddling with the cable stops won't do anything to help. Your existing rear mech will work ok with 10 speed anyway, so all you need in addition to the shifters is a chain and cassette.

    Although.....

Apparently, if you buy Campagnolo 10 speed shifters, you can run them with your Shimano 9 speed set up. If you want to "upgrade" to 10 speed later, you'll then need to change to Campag. See link.....

You can get away with buying the 10 speed shifters, 10 speed cassette and a 10 speed chain. Derailleurs and chainset will work fine. Chain and cassette would be about £40 I guess.

Depending on why you need to replace the levers can you sell any bits (e.g. one side) on e-bay to offset the cost?

You can use 10-speed levers with otherwise 9-speed kit by using an alternative cable routing at the rear mech. Not something I'd recommend for long term use, but possibly worth considering to allow you to upgrade piecemeal (though as already mentioned it's only a cassette and chain you need as well).
