Not the most exciting post in the world, but helpful if you have kit that smells, even after being laundered!

Having suffered with smelly kit for a number of years I thought I'd ask for advice at my local hardware/homeware store. They had a solution! There is a product made by Dylon called D-Toxy and it's worked for me. Aparently you can get it in Tesco as well.

I'll get my coat.

a cheaper alternative still is distilled malt vinegar. cup in the prewash drawer or use an old spray bottle (I use a spare mucoff one) to the affected items before sticking them in the wash. works fine and a big bottle is only 79p.

I second the vinegar idea, it kills the nasties.

Prevention is better than cure I reckon - regular washing of kit seems to result in it not becoming smelly in the first place (well that and using modern kit - some of the old stuff was prone to smelling, but none of my current kit is).

Or use merino wool as much as possible which doesn't seem to niff anywhere near as much as the man-made crud

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

i disagree. base layers that are not made of merino wool honk after a hard day, even new ones. That smell IS difficult to get out.

I think I will try the vinegar idea.

    Ta

  • Napisan is great for this - it is in most of the supermarkets, in the baby isle (for reusable nappies). It is also really effective as a stain remover/whitener (like the "oxy action" stuff). Fairly cheap too.

You can also freeze stuff before washing to further reduce the number of nasties which are actually alive.

What about shoes? After a few wet days last year they still have a nasty 'marshy' smell even when dry and worse when sweated into. It's not my feet by the way...
