I regularly mountain bike but wish to get more into road cycling. I've got £600 max. to spend on a new bike from my local bike shop. Any advice, suggestions or recommendations on what bike to buy in this price range would be very helpful. Thanks.

Andy, can you get a test ride? You should be able to find something that fits amongst the LBS's stock which is right for you and in your budget. All the big manufacturers do something in your price range, so you really are spoilt for choice. But to make sure you don't get something too focussed how about something like the Dawes Audax which will let you do more than just road riding. Specialized Allez, or Allez Sport
You also need to buy decent pedals, helmet, padded shorts etcRichard

I would go with that also0 -
I preferred the position of the Giant SCR to the Allez, that money should get the SCR 2. Boardman Comp also looked good in this price range.
Riding them should help, as soon as I rode the SCR I knew. Waiting for it to be delivered now.Current steed is a '07 Carrera Banshee X
+ cheap road/commuting bike0 -

I was the same first sit on the SCR and I was sold instantly, I managed to get the SCR 1 for £600 but at LBS its likely to be SCR2 for that money.0 -
I recently bought the Felt Z90, last year's model for £400. This years model retails for £600.
Nice relaxed geometry and looks very nice in a gloss black. Ideal for sportives etc.
Very comfortable ride!0 -
Try and buy something that you can downgrade in to a winter bike / commuter if you really get in to it and go for something more expensive in a year or two. The Trek 1000 comes with bosses for mudguards. (Specialised Allez is also good but you'd need to fit race guards) I have a Dolan winter bike as my second and I use it for commuting, winter (or wet) club rides and even did the etape du dales on it a couple of years back.0
