Finally, my new mech has turned up. And I have to say, what a mech!

Can't believe how much they've manage to get it tucked right under the chain stay. Managed to find it for £80, which I didn't think was to bad.

    Hi Matt,

I've never weighed it. And to be fair, with the amount I've drunk and eaten these past few weeks, it's me that's got to go on a weight loss programme! :(

Well that dates my 07 mech, and I was so proud of having XTR on the back. May have to consider an upgrade  . It is one fine looking mech.

What can i say, call me a magpie but i love anything shiny/expensive.

You haven't seen my new dhb longs then, For £40 they're a bargain and come scarily close to matching my assos roubaix which are considered top of the range at £120 for 3/4 bibs.

Have a nose in wiggle, it's their own brand.

phoorr! if i had one of those i think i'd just stare at it and drool and never fit it hehe :)

whats the pad like in those dhb's then?

Very good, similar to assos, could do with a touch more padding perhaps but that's a minor gripe, i just got back from testing them and im impressed, i will be sticking with dhb tights from now on i reckon.

Oh yes, got it today from crc, very nice im loving it a much improved redesign of the older lumpier xtr mechs, easily matches the sram x0 at nearly half the cost imo.

I also treated myself to a kmc 9L gold titanium nitride coated chain, they have nothing but praise from what ive read, i get along well with sramm but snap shimano xtr/dure ace very easily, trouble is i believe they make hg chains so im hoping this one will be a different breed.

I needed a new chain because of the longer cage the shadow has, i had to go gym today so i haven't had the chance to fit or test it yet......

Actually ashley when you fitted the mech did you find it caught the chainstay forcing you to bolt it back further despite shimano suggesting it might affect shifting.

I will read the instructions properly and see if ive missed anything, ive fitted lots of mechs before so id be surprised if i did.

    Hi Dazza,

No, that did'nt happen at all. Bolted it straight on without any problems. What bike have you put it on?

Tomac revolver, mmm well it said it might affect shifting presuming if the mech decides to slip, i'll just have to make sure it's done up nice and tight.

That's with my older xtr mech, as you can see it is close, the shadow only touches the chainstay on the lower two gears.

But as i say i'll have a proper look tomorrow, the chainstay wasn't allowing the mech to swing all the way in but i'll see if i can fix it, i was pressed for time.

With a bit of fiddling it did shift rather sweetly, much more responsive, earlier mechs have been known to lag a bit.

Actually if push comes to shove i can phone betd to make me a custom dropout, im sure they can and i'll have the tab the mech sits on a couple of mm back further to counter this.

    Nice indeed!
I am also now toying with a purchase (wife says THANKS ALOT!!) but I'm confused about cage length and chain compatabilty. I currently have XT F&R mechs and shifters, so will the XTR be OK? What determines cage length - how many gears you have?
    Cheers

Do you have 3 rings upfront and 9 speed rear..? If so a long cage rear mech normally.

The new xtr mech is very nice, i upgraded a month ago and the shifts are (imo) better then x0.

R.e HixX yes xtr is compatible with xt, as well as any other shimano 9 spd mechs/shifter.

    General rule is

long cage = 3 rings on front
med cage = 2 rings on front
short cage = single ring up front

However the xtr shadow does not come in medium cage, however i am running dual ring up front with a short cage.

Xtr shadow is available in medium just not as commonly available.

Well i found what the fault was, when i bolted it it was dark, i missed the lug that locks it onto the dropout, it siys back quite a bit now and looks damned sexy.

The lbs however did fob me off by selling my brother xtr rearr cables for a fiver, they aren't that's for sure looks more like your typical deore steel outer nylon inner and your typical teflon cabling.

Im not fussed as it was just a fiver and i plan to replace with something a bit metter maybe gore/avids or xtr we'll see after tonight.

Shifts are now sweet as anything, the kmc chain helps greatly, it's ramping performance is much better than sram and it feels very strong i just hope it is!!

Oh hixx, you will love this mech, it looks so godamned sexy

    Happy riding,

Edit: Im giving flying snakes a go.
