Nice, yes. A grand, not in my world.

Haven't fixed prices gone just plain stupid? Wish I still had six or so of those I've sold in recent years - I'd be able to afford one with gears!

I think he's working on the Sum of the Parts rather than the value of the whole. Which is a shame, as he's made a good job of the restoration. I'd do different on the rims, hubs and the saddle but apart from that it's spot on.

He'd be lucky to get that for a built up Hetchins or Ephgrave, let alone a humble Holdsworth.

I'm a sucker for old Holdsworths, but that does seem a bit steep. Lovely though. I could covet that!

My EG Bates attracted a bid of £1000, which was then (understandably) withdrawn when I found I couldn't shift the seatpost. It MIGHT sell for that, but my guess would be not. My opinion of Holdsworths is that they don't rank that high in the pantheon of English handbuilt bikes, partly because of the way they bought everything in the 60's/70's, but there are lots of other brands I'd much rather own (Grubb, Stan Pike, Rotrax, Hobbs just for a start). That said, the two or three that have passed through my hands have been nice enough bikes, and I was tempted to keep a Mistral at one stage.

  • thanks for the free advertising guys :D

all fair comments. wrights saddle was chosen as they were a more british make in my eyes, plus brooks are a dime a dozen. same with resilon hubs with milremo rims, very under-rated. yes could've splashed out on airlite laced to dunlop 27" clinchers, but again not my style. which is why is wasn't built to be perfect!

don't really want to sell, so just testing the water ;)

i like it, and you do want to sell it dogsballs, don't lie.

£1000 is a 'reasonable' BIN price, if you ask me.

unlikely to go for that, but it might. in terms of rarity value, yes, it probably is worth that. by the time you've built up a new bob jackson with equivalent parts, it's probably more than that anyway.

it's got people talking, which is a sure fire sign of a good bike.

I like it and if it were my bike it would be a keeper!

    Agree with your wisdom Peejay.

Renovation etc... costs and I think most do it as a labour of love and not to make a profit. Idon't see how you can make money on these machines.

With a purely BIN no way ever of knowing but in open auction I'd estimate 550 quids top. More than that no margin for the likes of HS to split and sell into US market!

Some of course (me included!) wouldn't ever bid on a "private"/ID not disclosed item.

i find ti very hard to ever make money on a build. i suspect dogsballs is merely seeing if he can recoup the expenditure and workmanship he clearly lovingly put into this renovation. fair play.

and i know that these bikes rarely go for a lot...

    but...

last time i saw a freddie grubb, frame and forks ONLY, it went for £500.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 672&nroo=1

so a full build in this style is likely to go for more. as you know though, it's a lottery.
  • the private setting is so buyers can by in confidence, i have nothing to hide!

for those interested this was the state of the frame when i recieved it ;)

As in buyers can buy "confidentially" - not with any confidence that a straight auction! Though I'm sure yours would be!

Nice bike. Lots of money spent, so you cant blame a guy for trying to recoup what he spends. I now wonder what my Holdsworth Whirlwind road/path is worth as only a handful survived. Not that I want to sell it as it took so long to find one.

I saw that in the flesh at Herne Hill. I think it's worth every penny of the £1000.

    Good luck with the sale.

While I sometimes express opinions that might lead one to place me in such a category, don't quite see such pointers in this topic! And "no" and "only when I was younger and very cold when travelling and had no other footwear."

Both affectations would look plain silly on this

Better get a shift on then - only 16 hours left!

I'm probably just jealous - not that long since I flogged a lovely '59 Rotrax for I think 150 quid! And a straight Hetchins-look- alike immaculate for ditto. And a beautiful Mottram track iron for less. And....aaaahhhhhhhh I can't go on!

They're only worth what someone will actually PAY. Loadsa folk drool over classic Italian steels. A NOS Daccordi (near a grand for today's equivalent) reached the giddy height of 286 quids last week - less than a ubiquitous Mercian or Jackson!
