Recommended seat post length?

I'm going to cut my seat post length down a bit as i don't feel i use all of it and its causing problems - how much do i need to leave in the bike so to speak? frame is a marin quake and i guess i've got about 15cm's showing at my full height.

yeah theres half the problem. the lower half has been catching on something sharp inside the frame and has all rubbed off so can't find the recommended amount. cutting it down may help to stop the rubbing too.0

I'd leave 3 inches in the frame, minimum, preferably 4.0
