Contador wins the first stage, Mosquero 2nd and David Herrero won a small group sprint for 3rd. Cunego, Evans, Ricco all 8 seconds down.

By the way, has there ever been an edition of this race where it didn't p*ss down for the entire week?

Well translated from the Basque, afx. Let's home it wasn't Octo minutes, rather than seconds to the bunch!

Basque looks very similar to Welsh when you think about. Way too many consonants. If you add in the mountains, the shiite weather and the looney separatist fringe... why they could be the same country!

Strong riding by Contador but don't forget, this is one of the biggest events he will do this year. Only the Vuelta and Dauphine offer more. So he's probably on top form but others like Ricco and Evans are in a training phase.

Why do you think Kelly kept winning it?
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

I was reading a google translation of a spanish text update site - apparently Accountant won the stage.

We also loan them our crap footie managers when we're not using them. I'd still rather live in San Sebastian than Cardiff mind... and their mountains ain't full of Saes all-the-gear-no-idea Orange-full-sus--Howies Fanboys every weekend

Anyone see the end of today's stage? Absolutely brutal climb with about 10km to go - 26% in one part and half the peloton were forced to walk

I guess the rain (what a surprise) didn't help.

That was quite epic out there today!!!
The climb was absolutely brutal, very very steep! It was great to see so many fans lined up there! It looked almost like a mountain stage in the Tour, the crowds were massive!
    Brilliant!
Rodriguez was almost too strong even for Contador, he really had to dig deep to stay on his wheels.
The terrible weather made it even more challenging!
    Great stage!

It really sucks that Astana is not invited to the Tour this year, Cadel was able to wheelsuck his way up to Contador and Rodriguez after the steep section, this would've been a great forplay for the Tour...

Herrero luckily didn't brake any bones in the crash in the end, and he will start tomorow, bruised for sure.
  • Hi there.

Cadel's attentiveness in yesterdays stage shows that he definiately is riding to win, training phase or not. He needs to beat Contandor in the TT today or else he'll face the situation in July where he may well win the tour, but everyone will point out that Contador was a better rider.

I seem to remember Contador stunning everyone in the Basque TT when he was a neo pro, but the Cadel has a habit of clinching short tours on the final day too...

Let's hope the rain stays off, and mainly falls on the Northern French plains instead.

    Cheers, Andy

Cadel will face that situation regardless if he wins today, the climbs on this race don't come even close what's on the menu in the Tour....
    cheers, Arkibal
  • Wow, Berty was in dominating form - looked like everyone else was in a different race.

He really is too good to be true. Next he'll be winning San Remo from a bunch sprint.
