Audax bikes?

I think I'd like to get an audax sometime soon. I like the idea of going fast but as I have a small son will also spend quite a lot of time meandering at a reasonable pace, carrying lunch whilst screaming at him to watch out for traffic.
Can anyone recommend a reasonable bike make/model? I'm looking to spend maybe 600 quid or so. Is this realistic?
Advice and opinions greatly appreciated.

Ribble winter/Audax build
You can get them to build you up a mirage or tiagra equipped bike for less than £600.

Kenesis Racelight, I love mine and you can fit mudgaurds properly with 28c tyres unlike the Ribble ( the Ribble is very good value).0

Dawes Audax, Ridgeback Horizon. You are also close to custom frame territory for some of the cheaper builders. You should also consider the Giant Scr range, which are really nice.0
