I wonder what happens to the bikes the pros use when the season finishes. Do they go up for sale anywhere? (Comobike used to sell the Lampre Wiler bikes for what seemed like a good deal).

Interesting question. But after doing at least 20-30,000km, I think they'd be pretty worn out.

Somewhat related... I am just beginning to sell the first lot of bikes in my fleet after 12-18 months. I can't be bothered haggling too much over the price of 20 bikes, so I decided to set the initial used price at 50% rrp. I'm hoping it proves popular with the locals here who can't always afford the best kid (especialy the youngn's)

many of them are 'promised', to supporters clubs or charities for auctions etc, and they're usually the training bikes... clapped out and well ridden, and they're gone by November. Occasionally you can organise one to come back your way via a pro who will bring it back on holidays, but the bikes belong to the teams and the riders buy them from the team if they're not otherwise assigned (for an excellent price) and onsell them for a couple of grand. Best by far is to get yourself down to Adelaide in January - most teams turn up with last years race bikes and sell them here before heading back to Europe/Qatar/Langkawi. Earlier this year you could pick up a Bougyues Telecom Time with Record Groupset for about A$3,500. Many of the teams are off back to their Services Course to kit up with the new season goodies as soon as the TDU is over, you see.*

*except HighRoad, who got to exchange really crap outfits for even crappier ones.
