Does anyone have a Ridley cross bike? Im completely confused by sizing.

Im just over 6foot and sat on a 52cm in the shop yesterday and it only felt a little small, the shop assistant recommended a 54cm frame. However that only has a top tube of 54.5cm which compared to my 58cm road bike seems really small, it just didnt feel it.

Im going to use it for commuting, so may want to ride a flat bar...am I right in thinking in this case id be better off running a longer top tube because there is no forward throw of the drop bars?!

Confused, any help please?

  • Hi there.

As a rule cross bikes generally have a shorter top tube than road race bikes, as you sit more upright when riding on the bumpy stuff.

You could off course compensate (compromise) with a longer stem, but maybe a cross bike isn't what you're looking for?

  • Hi andrew, thanks.

The reason behind thinking about a cross frame is the versatility. I can run it as a commuter, road bike, touring bike, treking bike...with a change of tyres and bars...

Ive also been looking at something like the cotic roadrat, and surly models...
  • HI there.

Yup that's all possible. My cross bike is used for racing, winter commuting, wet weather training, and even towing child trailer bikes.

I wouldn't use flat bars though, unless you like riding slowly...

    Cheers, Andy
  • Ive always liked flat bars and found with bar ends getting resonably aero is not that hard...
