Help with a confused Shimano Shifter?

Hi gang,

I was out on a gentle ride on Saturday (I'm glad I didn't wait until Sunday!) and just before home I hit a problem with my shifter for the rear mech. The shifter is a Shimano Tiagra STI and it appears to have got a little confused.

The problem appears to be that the shifter thinks I'm in the lowest gear, and thus prevents me from downshifting further, when in fact its in the 4th from bottom gear. The indicator on the top of the shifter shows the correct position, i.e. several from the bottom. The rear mech has lateral movement in it too so I'm pretty sure its not that. I've tried shifting all the way up and then back down but it still gets stuck at the 4th from bottom.

I think the bike needs a service as its done 1000 miles since I bought it but I can't get that done until the weekend and I need the bike to ride on this week. Has anyone got any ideas how I can fix it before the weekend?

Thanks,

Rob

It sounds like there is an internal problem with the ratchet in the shifter. Not an easy thing to cure either, without two little tools to enable you to reassemble the shifter if you strip it down. Best left to an LBS with experience if you ask me.
