Suspension seat posts

Hi, I recently got my GT Avalanche and I'm really happy with it, unfortunately I've had back problems in the past and it seems that riding is bringing these problems out again, I know I could probably enjoy a lot more comfort on a full suspension bike but, I only got this bike in January and though my plan was to upgrade to full suspension eventually I don't want to really go that way just yet.
So I was wondering if a springy seat post would be any good as a short term measure, and if anyone could recommend one?

I'm really beginning to enjoy my cycling now my fitness is improving and I don't want niggly back pain to give me a reason to stop now.

I'd look at your riding position as well.

Sus posts do take the sting out of the bike, and I'd recommend trying one out. Don't go for the ultra cheap ones, very heavy and fall to bits! Something like a USE SX would be a good investment.

Cheers, I'd not thought of looking into my seating position, but then again I'm not sure of the best way to adjust it, I'm not too hunched over my handlebars and I think I have the saddle height just about right. Guess it'll pay to play around a little and see how it goes,

I'll look up the USE SX though, otherwise I could end up looking at blowing my upcoming ex gratia payment on another new bike
  • I believe the cane creek thud buster is highly recommended if a little funny looking. Steve Worland bike tester extrodinare rated them very highly some time ago. not cheap mind you.

white brothers do one which has an adjustable air spring, like a single legged fork under your saddle. looks good but pricey if i remember.

I have back problems as well and have a USE XCR which I've been using for many years and can highly recommend. Stick with the standard medium yellow spring / elastomer combo unless you're really heavy, over 14st, and adjust the preload to take out all the trail rumble.

Well I went to my bike shop at lunch time to look at the options on a suspension seat post, and now I've ended up walking out with a Marin Rift Zone on trial.
Good sales person, or stupid easily led consumer :(

It's the 2008 1 Disk in Large and I think it's great, well worth the asking price, this Marin is only on trial just to see if full suss will improve my back pain, so I'm not selling it (yet)!
