Please be gentle - i'm a newbie :D

The rockhopper is at the top of my shortlist for a new bike, had a quick test ride on one and liked it, but I may have an option to get a 2007 model Comp instead.

2008 Disc
2007 Comp Disc:

Usually the Comp costs £150 more, but I'm just wondering which would be better.

Also on sizing, I tried a 17" one, and that felt about right, I'm 5'10" am I likely to need the 19"? I'd have to find another shop that has one in stock if it's worthwhile taking a test ride on one.

Thanks for any advice.

If it felt right, then its the right size! The 2007 one is a better spec, and lighter, so I don't see any reason not to get it if the same price.

Thanks for that. On the question of size I guess I don't really know how it should feel, I tried a trek 6300 too and that was a 15" which did feel smaller (too small) so I know I need at least 17".

Can't wait to get it now :D

Different brands measure up in different ways. Go on what feels best on a particular brand, and try not to make direct comparisons.

I find Specialized frames to be quite small (I have three). I'm 5'8" and a 17" frame fits me (and my 5'6" wife) fine.

I reckon the non Comp does all you need it to do - we have one and it's an excellent bike.

I'll double check but I think the 07 Comp is a 19" which may be too big (haven't tried one yet) so I might have to rule that out anyway. I'd be curious to compare the 2 even though the 17" felt OK (didn't feel too small).

    There's an 18" too.

I'd go smaller if you can - more chuckable.

Partly depends eactly how you ride it. If you are doing more serous stuff its common to get a smaller frame size. Larger for more lesurly rolling xc.

Im 6ft2 and went for the 19" (07disk 8months ago).
    - I did consider the 17" but it decided it was too small for me
    - However my dad has a 17" (hardrockpro) which ive spend some on too. He's 5ft8

I jumped in with both feet and got a 19".

Took it for a test ride and it felt 'right'. Mind you the 17" didn't feel 'wrong', that felt OK too. It's going to be 90% leisurely stuff and maybe 10% hardcore (well sort of), so perhaps I'll find out then if it's too big!

    Cheers for all the advice.

I have the 07 disk and went for a 19". I am 6ft and its fine. Doesnt feel too big - even on the hardcore stuff. You will find though that when you propoerly push it, say on a rock garden - the nature of the bike is a little skittish - but it adds to the fun in my opinion.

I found the standard tyres to be pants
