I don't want to run 9 or 10 speed are there any 8 speed chainsets out there that would suit a mid 90's Dawes Galaxy?
I thought perhaps Stronglight but they seem to be 9 and 10?

9 or 10 speed cranks will work fine with an 8 speed cassette

From FCN from 8 (road bike, beard, bag, work clothes) to 15 (on my Brompton)0 -
I never realised that. Many thanks!0

A Stronglight Impact or Sugino XD would be ideal. Cheap, pretty, strong, not too heavy. Perfect touring gear range too.0

I really like the look of the Sugino especially the crown logo version.
But where on earth in the UK can you buy one?
Thanks again.0 -

8 speed
Erm... if it works with an 8 speed cassette will it work with an 8 speed chain as they are not as narrow?
Is the spacing between the chain rings smaller than on a traditional 8 speed chain set?0 -
All the 3/32 chains are the same internal dimension, but the higher the cog count, the narrower the external dimension, and hence, the thinner the plates etc. Hence, a 10 speed chain will work with an 8 speed cassette, no problem. The width is an issue at the back because of all of the cogs being crammed together. At the front, there's usually lots of clearance between the rings, so it shouldn't be a problem, but you never know. However, 8 speed cassette, 10 speed crankset, 10 speed chain would work fine, so you've always got something to go to.

Thanks for clearing that up.
I want to Shimergo the Galaxy.
10 speed Centaur Ergo shifters paired up with a Shimano 8 speed cassette.
I have an option to keep 8 or 9 speed down tube shifters so I am not totally inflexible.0 -

The crown logo version is getting kind of rare. You could order them from Velo Orange in Annapolis, USA. I have dealt with them, and they have been good. In the UK, you might try Hubjub.0 -
Cheers acorn_user. It's a shame that the good things are always over seas. I ordered the Viva bag Loops from VO. I like what they sell along with what Rivendell Bicycle Works sell.
