My C2W scheme makes the same claim. Here's the rub. I want a Trek and it turns out they've fallen out with Halfords in such a big way that they won't delivery at all to Half shops. I'm going to have to drive from Harrogate to Lancaster in order to pick up my bike from one of the 6 shops that Trek are prepared to deal with  . So much for my carbon footprint...

yeah, thats why I had to pick my TREK up from another shop which was great cause they made it up rather than me have to pay LBS to make it up as i would not have Halfords touching it !

    What trek are you getting?

I'm getting the 1.9. Right on the £1000 limit for my c2w scheme.

That looks NICE. I got the 1.5 and I really like it but as first road bike i was a bit worried about spending the full £1000

    I'll upgrade next year !

If Im reading this right and you are picking the bike up from Halfords @ Lancaster you'll be ok. Mike, who is a mechanic there, is a very good time trial rider and a very competent bike builder.

BTW, if anybody wants to source a bike on a Halfords C2W scheme, give Leisure Lakes Bikes ( http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com) a call, they supply bikes to Halfords and thats who I bought my Specialized off and to who I handed over my voucher!!

I think it's a little unfair to tarnish the entire chain based upon indivduals dealins with them. For every disgruntled customer, you'll probably find 100 you are more then happy with Halfords customer service.
I've now bought two Cboardman bikes. A hybrid Pro and a Comp roadbike, never had anything but great service from my local Halfords store (St.Andrews Quay, Hull). I'm recently back into biking, indeed me drooling over the Boardman range one bored afternoon is what sparked my intrest in cycling again after 15 years away.
Neither bike has done anything less then I could have hoped for. Indeed I'd be more then happy to buy a bike from them again, just seems that you get more bike for you buck compared to the few local bike shops that I visited before I handed over my cash.

Actually, it's LeisureLakes that I have to go to. Trek will only delivery to one of their 7 shops; not to Halfords at all. Maybe that's Trek being awkward as my LBS orignally expected to be able to take delivery.

    A right P in the A whoever's to blame.

Nice to hear that LeisureLakes are good, though.

  • Hi.

Just bought the boardman comp, (from halfords) on the cycle to work scheme. got it home and took it for a test ride in my street, and before I know it, changing the gear to the big ring, the chain came off.

Strange I thought for a brand new bike!

Put the chain back on, changed it to the small ring, then big ring, then shifted the gears to a high gear, the rear mech gets caught in the rear wheel, snaps off and breaks the rear wheel!!!

Not a good start, but feel the guys who work there are not great mechanics.

They're in the process of replacing the mech and rear wheel, once collected, ill be taken it to my local trusted cycle shop!!!

At least I got a garmin 705 out of the cycle to work, thats all i can say!!!!

How on earth can the mech get caught in the wheel if its in high gear.

HIGH Gear - larger (outside) chain ring and smallest (outside) cog on the cluster

LOW gear inside chain ring and largest (closest to spokes) cog on the cluster.

generally you only break the mech when it is close to the spokes.

I presume you mean large chain whee; (on the outside) and large cog on the cluster. This should generally be avoided as it stretches the chain due to its bad allignment, depending on the setup can also stretch out the mech to or beyond its limits (ITHAT IS the bike is not designed to be ridden like that) and cause a failure.

There really needs to be a sticky in the beginers forum on gearing and what gear combinations should be avoided.

Oh don't worry I wouldn't shop there for anything. The problem is they act like an LBS in that they delve into semi-serious machines such as the Boardman range, and for the prices they sell their bikes, they invite and 'serve' the general public, but don't have the expertise for professional service, hence the many complaints and greivances.

I agree about the PC World bit as well. :D

Just pointing out a bit of bike snobbery here - both Men and Women's National champs were won on Boardman Pro's.

I still wouldn't buy one mind, I'd rather support my (fantastic) lbs, Fred Williams

Agreed. In Wolves we are lucky to have such a good lbs. Fred's is like bike nirvana, with great staff and so much stuff and so many bikes to choose from.

    and no - I wouldn't get a pc from pc-world either....

  • :? Hmmmmmm, the title of this thread is a bit misleading. I have 3 people who have bought Boardman bikes and none of them have had any trouble with them.
I can't comment on Halfords as I rarely use them, but when I have, I treated them the same way as any other national chain (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Currys) i.e get in, get what I want (if it's in stock), get out.....quick

Are we saying that Boardman bikes are inferior in quality, or just badly set up[/b]? If they're inferior I wouldn't recommend them. But, as I have said, there's been no bad comments as yet.

I think the consensus is that Halfords are less than diligent about bike set up. If this is the case isn't there anywhere else the C2W (or whatever) can be took advantage through?

I've heard nothing but good reports about Boardmans be it in reviews or from people who have them - my brother has one of the Boardman hybrids which he got as a replacement for a nicked Specialized Sirrus hybrid (insurance was a Halfords voucher) and we both agree its much better bike. The problem is certainly (occasional) poor set up at the Halfords end - I see that Boardman will supply the bikes direct through the website now. To say that Halfords are bad and LBS' good is furthermore a bit simplistic - LBS's seem to employ far more than their fair share of patronising w@nkers which just plays into the hands of the chain retailers. For me buying online from Wiggle was the perfect way to avoid the lot of 'em
  • In my opinion the bikes are setup badly, thus having the issues I have had.

Going to take the bike out soon for a nice long ride so will have an update soon.
