Freehub slippage - what is wrong?

Went out today and found that my freehub was slipping. The whole cassette was rotating a quarter turn randomly. It was also not click click clicking when freewheeling.

Took the wheel off and found that some flat nuts which I think are called end nuts were loose on both sides so tightened them by hand and that seemed to fix the problem. Do they need tightening any more? Ho do I know when they are overtightened?

Thanks :?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but they're overtightened when either the hub or the casette doesn't spin freely.

It depends on your hub type.

if you have the old type hubs with ball bearings you tighten the nut on one side until the wheel spins freely on the bearings without any noticable friction. Easiest way is to slightly overtighten until the wheel doesn't spin then slack off until there is no friction.
The new oversized hubs have cartridge bearings there are spacing tubes that prevent overtightening pressure on the bearings so the nuts can be tightened tightly.
    hat wheels do you have?

don't mix up the axle nuts with the freehub nut. The freehub nut is what holds your frrehub on the axle and if loose the pawls on the freehub will not engage with the toothed race within the hub which is why your freehub is slipping .Clear as mud.eh?.

I am using a Powertap SL hub which is known to have issues with bearings and cones hence the anxiety. Using Campag freewheel
