52cm will be too small... 54 or 55 would be about right.

No it won't. I'm nearly 5'9" and I've just bought a 50cm ribble frame (horiz geometry) and the top tube is 55cm!! Most are not that long on a 50cm granted, but a 52cm frame with a 12cm stem would easily be big enough for a 5"9' person

good job hes not taking me bicycle shopping then
  • I am a smidge under 6' with 31" inside leg but I have a long body, therefore, the 58cm frame was right for me (fitted at my LBS).

You can't beat having at least a sit on the bike of your choice, better still a test ride. If you must buy off the Interweeb, at least consider going to your nearest Evans cycle shop to try a frame for size.

    Good luck

What kind of 50cm bike has a 55cm top tube?

Here's the best sizing chart I could find:

I'm a smidgen over 5'10 with a cycling inseam of 33 inches who went for a Focus Variado Expert 56cm ct with a top tube of 56.5 and 110mm stem. As a newbie who had just bought my first road bike I thought it was too big but on reading and learning and adjusting, it's not too big at all. With my feet on the ground there's about an inch between the top tube and my groin, sat on it with the saddle at the correct height and my hands on the drops and looking down at the front axle, it's obscured by my handlebars. Riding in the drops with a slightly bent arm my elbow comes to within an inch of my knee when my knee is at its most forward position.

I would think that a 58 cm bike would be too big for me so definitely too big for you at an inch smaller...
