Camping French Alps July

I'm planning to tour for a couple of weeks in July, taking in the French Alps and watching the Alp D'Huez TDF stage. I'm going to camp the whole time and was wandering if anyone knows if there are many campsites in that area and if they are likely to be overun with people watching the Tour?

Simply, if I don't pre-book anything, will I find a spot for my tent?

There are lots of camp sites but they will get full up so i would try and get in early.
