What bike?

I'm probably moving to Kerry this summer and I'm beginning to wonder what bike would be suitable. We will be living in an old farm cottage at the end of a 2k rutted dirt farm track, however part of it is along the strand and is covered by tidal water twice a day.
I'll probably be cycling about 30k each way to work, but at the weekends I'll be exploring the countryside and going on to some fairly rough mountain tracks. We won't have a car so all our shopping will be carried in by bike from Killorglin which is about 5k away.
So I need something strong, capable of carrying fairly heavy loads, comfortable, able to get me over mountain passes and reliable.
Is there such a thing? I was thinking of a cross bike of some sort, would this do?
BTW no red lights unless I go into Killarney or Tralee!!!!
