Frame sizing

OK, after a car park road test the other week, i couldn't tell any difference between a 17" frame and an 18" frame. Shop man said both appeared to fit me fine, choose whichever felt more comfortable.
Should i be looking to get the larger or smaller frame? Is there something some reason that one or other would be a better decision long term?

Ok my rule of thumb is this, (and people will disagree) is get the smallest bike you can get away with, as long as it doesnt feel cramped and you seat post isnt over reached. i say this because, smaller is lighter, feels stiffer, and more chuckable!0

Smaller will be more flickable, making it slightly easier to push through tight turns and control in the air. Larger will be more stable, and you will have more breathing room so you should be able to be a bit faster.0

What grounds would there be for disagreement?0

Get a bigger bike so that you can get into an xc position as opposed to a more trails position0
