I hope someone can help solve a discussion me and a few of my mates are having.

If you have a bike with a quill type headset, can you change it to an aheadset type like most decent mountain bikes have. This is not for any particular bike its just a general wondering.

If you were to do it, how would you do it?

    yes you can.

you just need to know what size steerer and get headset to match, a new stem, some headset spacers and of course a suitable replacement fork. (yes there are steerer extenders but I do not like them for MTB's).

You'd also need a top cap and something for preloading (be that bolt through or SFN) wouldn't you, in all likelihood, need a new headset, as the converters for bolted to a-headset aren't that usable between different headsets.
