I've been cycle commuting for about 3 years. For the last 20 months I've been eaving bikes at each end of a rail joirney without any problems. On Wednesday I came back to my bike on the home leg to find that one of my cables (rear mech as it happens) had been neatly cut where it runs along the top tube. It looked like a clean cut but could it have been an accident? I found more marks where they had tried but failed to cut through the sleeved cable coming out the side of the shimano 105 levers.
THis was not too much of a problem (had to ride home in 42x12), the (excellent) LBS fitted a replacement cable for £9 inc labour, but what were they trying to do and why?
Were they attempting to get me to leave the bike there overnight so they could come back with tools to deal with my locks?
Had I offended someone who was trying to get their own back?
Was it just kids messing about?
The bike racks are supposed to be under CCTV and I've reported it too British transport Police. They've assigned an officer and given me a crime number. I've hammed up the "what if they were trying to disable my brakes - could have been nasty" angle a bit.
Will post if we get anywhere,
J

My girlfriend's been having problems at her work with people undoing the quick release on her v brakes - and a couple of times trying to remove the cable altogether, My money would be on scrotes pissing about, but i wouldn't want to rule out the chance that someone's trying to nick your bike.point your handlebars towards the heavens and sweat like you're in hell0

Me and a pal stopped to get some food in a cafe after our first 'long' ride. The cafe was next to a public library with bike rails outside in full public view. When we'd had a drink and a sandwich we came back out to the bikes - still locked away securely - but the release had been switched on his brakes and my back wheel was loosened. Seems like the kind of things you would do hoping it would cause someone to get hurt?
Just relieved they didn't kick the wheels to death - seems to be a common ailment for parked bikes. It's pretty shocking that these things happen to locked bikes in full view on a busy public thoroughfare'07 Langster (dropped one tooth from standard gearing)
