Dear All,
I have been challenged to do the Coast to Coast (Carlisle way to Tynemouth) in July and have accepted. Also I have just moved to Monkseaton and was considering a bike for general use etc. Question, what sort of bike would be recommended for the coast to coast run but also practical for day to day on the road/easy off road. I need one bike but obviously look at treads, accessories etc.
Thanks

Is this the Hadrian's Way route?
If so apart from a rough route into Carlisle the whole route is fine by almost any bike.He that buys land buys many stones.
He that buys flesh buys many bones.
He that buys eggs buys many shells,
But he that buys good beer buys nothing else.

You would be best off with a hardtail (a bike with just front suspension) possibly with a lock out fork (can help with climbs & on road riding)
What sort of budget did you have in mind?
Tyres, you can get slicks (for road use) semi slicks (I did the C2C on these in Summer '05) and the usual MTB knobbly tyres.
Semi slicks can be a good compromise in the dry, they will grip quite well on dry of road trails & have less rolling resistance (drag) on the roads.
A camelback would be a good idea, you can get them large enough carry a multi tool, spare tubes(s), pump, tyre levers, food, a waterproof jacket & your water (upto 3 litres for the biggest bladders) and anything you may need along the way.0 -
