Since changing to an MTB/XC stem, I have about 1mm of steerer tube protruding above the stem top. Is this enough protrusion to use an upper spacer or do I cut the steerer tube so that it sits a couple of mm down from the stem top?

The steer should be 3mm less than the stack height so you can apply the proper preloading through the top cap.

Sounds like a 5mm spacer would be about right - I'd try it and see.

Thanks for that. I would prefer the spacer option as cutting 4mm accurately from the steerer tube would be a bit fiddly.
