i had a 105 rear mech that was destroyed during mechanical failure.

i intend to upgrade to ultegra. ultegra have short and medium cage versions.

i'm running 34/50 front, 12/27 rear. i think the short will be OK especially as i don't use the smallest front and smallest rear at the same time.

your thoughts pls! :D

Short will work (I've tried it) but Mr Shimano says GS (med) cage. If you're buying new I'd go for the latter. Compatibility charts are on the Shimano website.
  • cheers, Rob.

when you say it will work, did you experience any issues?

i'm keen to go for short as it will look better, but obviously want it to work!

No issues here but I was careful about not taking the p*ss with the chaniline. I wouldn't recommend it , and you'd be frankly mad to deliberately buy the incorrect one when you could just as easily get the correct fitting, but it will work if you need it to.

I have the same 34/50 and 12/27 setup as you with a short mech. I carefully shortened the chain so the mech cage could cope at both extremes. Obviously i never use big/big or small/small but if i did it would not be a problem except for the ridiculous chainline.
If you want to play safe get the longer one, if you want short it works fine.
