Yet ANOTHER Carlton!

Well, it's blue and says it's a Carlton! Frame prefix makes it a '59 or a '71-72. I assume the latter, but a bit odd...came to me with a 126 rear hub, once wheel out settled back to 110! Yet it has drop outs with mech hanger. To get even a 700x20 rear in axle has to be almost all the way back in the slots (the stays are very close together at b/b end).
And it slopes towards the front - I rather suspect someone has fitted a shorter fork.
No stop on the down tube for band on shifters. Gear cable stops look decidedly like "additions".
I cut and shut the rear axle down to 110 - no point in stressing the stays and had to be respaced etc for fixed.
Quite light for an old steel - 22lbs.
Rides fast (by my standards, you understand).
Pics in a minute!

Sounds like it might be intended for 650's? That, or it's an uber-tight clearance racing beeeatch. Sure is pretty, whatever it is.

Well...the rear brake bridge and the fork crown have enough clearance for a 27x1 1/4 - just the chain stays that are short and close! And that 110 rear is more '50s track than anything...but whatever - as you say, pretty enough and rides very nicely. Though I'd forgotten how little suspension in x20 tyres!

How odd! I can't think of any rational explanation for mismatched clearances like that, so I won't advance any!

I can't help thinking that at that age, it would've been fitted with 27's, but would they fit? Or perhaps it was sprints - I'd have thought sprints and tubs would fit if a 700c x 20 does. Could it be that it's older than you thought, and a path racer? It looks late 60's early 70's to me, and I don't know that anyone was really making path racers any more in 71/72, but if it were the earlier date you mention....

Sadly, I don't know of any really good Carlton resources, although some of the vintage Raleigh heads on bikeforums Classic and Vintage might know more.

I'm looking again at it, and the geometry is really relaxed. I can't understand why it should have such tight chainstay clearance. Weird.

Dave .This bike looks much better as a fixed wheel . I still think the frame was a special build .Paul

Fixed does suit it, doesn't it? As for the rear end, my first thought was that someone had old drop outs removed and replaced with ones with a hamger - but then why wouldn't they have had it taken out to 126 at same time (although easy enough to spring it each time insert a 126 wheel)?

Whatever, it now has a custom-made rear hub and a pretty good chain line and is a perfectly useable BIKE!

Indeed, that's the main thing. And let me say again that I really like it, and would absolutely ride it. I just enjoy the forensics of figuring these things out......

More likely to be intended for 26 x 1 1/4" than 650's on an old brit bike.

Doubt it! It's only the chain stays that are *tight*. Can't think of any brakes long enough to reach smaller than a 700 front or rear!

Frame's for sale BTW if anyone wants it - 25 quid plus post?

Dave . I should try a pair of tub rims built to fixed wheel spec.

That would help I'm sure (tho' it will fit standard 700x20-23s with the wheel at rear of axle slot). Just not sure I need it really!
