Wheel skewers - threaded bit protruding

I bought my dad some Hope wheel skewers (blue colour to match his frame) and he is chuffed with them, but I note that there is a bit of threaded skewer protruding about 0·7cm beyond the end cap. Is it safe to saw this off so that it is a more flush fit :?: Any advice appreciated.

    yes fine...

make sure you tidy the end up after ( emery paper etc ) ..make sure you get a fine blade to cut it ..

It looks like you got MTB skewers (135mm) rather than Road (130mm) skewers (assuming this is happening on the rear only).

I'm not too sure whether I'd cut the end off - I think it's depend on how much you've got left if you did.

I'd run a die down the thread before you cut it. Reversing the die will ensure that the thread is re-established on the end of the skewer and prevent cross threading.

Thank's RedDragon... Jesus - I didn't know Hope did road-specific skewers and failed to check this

Looks like it should be okay to chop the protruding bit off so I will have a look at that this weekend. Thanks for input everyone :)

  • If they have a steel skewer, put a bit of silver paint on the end after you've finished,or your dad's lovely skewers will go rusty on the part you have cut.
