Bit confused about which style of mudguard to get, its either the SKS chromoplastics full mudguard or the SKS Race Blades. Advice on either would be gratefully welcomed.

I recently had this predicament after buying my new bike. On my old bike I had been using plastic full length mud guards which gave very good protection.
On my new bike a Carrera Kraken I have gone for a cantilever 'blade' type rear and a 'crud catcher' down tube style on front. They look good but the rear is not as effective in the wet, mostly due to the gap that you will get just behind the seat as it covers a lot less of the wheel than a conventional guard.
  • My vote goes to the chromoplastics: I recently bought an SCR2, tried in vain to fit Giant's own-make guards, before turning to SKS. Fit very well, protect perfectly, easy to adjust, seem very robust - what more could you want?? I've heard race blades are fine, but slightly second best, and if you have the fixings for full guards, go with the SKS ones.

On a related question (i.e. I hope I am not hijacking this thread) - what are the fixings needed for full guards? I have a mountain bike (hardtail), now used purely on-road. I have road tyres and was thinking of mudguards, but am not sure if they would work or not. Obviously I can ask the LBS when I finally get round to going there, but if it is easy to explain what I should be looking for I might be able to hazard a guess on what options i actually have.
Training, highway design and increasing cycle numbers are important to safety. Helmets are just a red herring.

Thanks for the advice Canterbury, got a feeling I'll have to have a trip to the LBS at the weekend to see what they suggest, just nipped out of the office to have a look at the bike and I noticed that I've not got much space between the top of the front tyre and the forks, plenty on the back for a full guard.

Whome, you might want to try the mtb type that clip to the frame, don't know how well they protect from spray though.

    :)

Full fat SKS, have them on the Sirrus and they are absolutely superb

Mind you, have a mate who's got a full-on roadie who did an end to end last year on 'blades, thinks they're the dog's

It's just a hill. Get over it.
