I live 30 miles from my work and have been contemplating a cycle ride to work for the first time to see how i get on, I am fairly new to cycling so this would take me at least 2-3 hours. My company is into recycling and green issues, so i could not believe it when I discovered that they have filled the bike shed with lots of chemical containers stopping anyone from using the shed for its proper purpose, there is no where else to store a bike safely, has anyone else had a similar experience.

  • Wow. 30 miles. That does not sound a nice at all. It would put me off cycling forever!

Can you do part of the journey by train maybe?
  • I will probably tryy and choose a nice sunny day (if thats possible) :?

i doubt you can do much to force the issue except gathering more staff as cyclists, that may convince them to provide proper storage. But if its anything like where i work they won't be interested - mine reckon leaning it against the wall is perfectly sufficient as storage
Morning route (when i don't get the train)

    Evening route ,

What an idiotic response on a cycling forum! Are you even a cyclist bear_bearson?

As for the chemicals, personally I would simply move the containers out until I could lock my bike up.

  • The containers can only be moved by fork lift, and would not be tolerated by the bosses.

Bit harsh. It's not a bad idea to tell someone who hasn't cycled in a while that they might be better off starting with something less likely to knacker you into giving up. A daily 60-mile commute would be tough for anyone.

    Thank you Kafka.

A beginner to cycling attempting a 30 mile commute one way! That is hugely demanding.

If part of the commute could be done by train and then say 30 mins by bike, this would be a nice introduction and maybe could build up to the full 30 miles.

I don't think its an "idiotic" comment at all, I could however say the same about the "knee-jerk" response to my post.
  • bear_bearson I agree with you, it certainly is a good idea to split up the journey.

One possible way to tackle it:-

Questions depend on the answer to this: Does the company have ISO14001?

    Does this chemical storage comply?

Does the inability to use the cycle shed contradict any 14001 'mission statement'?
  • Its because of ISO14001 that we are in this situation, because the chemical storage needs to be in a shelter otherwise the chemical tank would fill up with rain water.

Our company enclosed our bike shed within a security fence and refused to relocate it as the remaining space and money was allocated for a smoking shelter.

Luckily there are others on the premises, but it's a 5 minute walk from the next best shelter to my desk.
  • I will have to use my office as shelter  , Its just that they have had a shelter here for years and now as i think about cycling to work they decide to use it for something else.

Yes, re reading it today, that does seem a little harsh to say the least. I apologise for that.

I see where you are coming from now and perhaps didn't at the time.
