When people walk up to your desk, saying "Are you busy?" and then paying no attention whatsoever to the fact that you clearly are up to your eyeballs in it, or giving you a change to answer, carrying on with their very important message/task/request regardless...
[have just realised it's not so much the phrase that irks me, more the actions that follow it!]

If we are talking about the past and what might have been then we write "I could have been..."

Shortened this becomes I could've been..." But in spoken English it sounds like "I could of been...."

And now it's appearing in the written form as could of been; must of been, would of been etc etc.

And it's not just the younger generation.

Watch out, now you know it's happening you'll see it all over the place.

The terms that hackle with me are:

    'Collaborative project'

    'Empowerment'

    'Partnership working'

-all the above are sludge on fudge!

Why don't folk say what they mean and mean what they say???

    Nice one.

Re "innit" I still get a warm glow when I remember a conversation on another forum, when some people were arguing about which 90's music scene invented the current use, (Misuse,) of the word. I dropped into conversation that I had just been watching a dvd of "Boys From the Blackstuff" from 1982 and Loggo was using it all the time. :D

Wierd one this, as I am totally irreligiouse, (is that a word?) but I don't like Blastphemy. I think because my Mum hates it.

I swear all the time, and there is no word i don't routinely use, but I don't swear in front of women i don't know, or I know don't like it, or kids. Therefore I hate 4 letter swear words on lighters, towels, tee shirts etc.

In general, I don't like negative people, or comments. If i ask how you are, Replies such as, "As well as can be expected," "Mustn't Grumble," and "Under the circumstances, alright I suppose," are all guaranteed to make me want to slap you.

    Txt Spk!

I also think that "whoopee cushions," being renamed "Fart Cushions," was the begining of the end of civilisation as we know it.

And that was my audition for the next series of Grumpy Old Men. :D:D:D

I don't hate the use of words as such. My pet hat is the inappropriate use such as like.
"He was like" and "I was like" instead of "I/he said", when telling a story. Also, when the wrong tense is used, in a sentence. The only other one is when a person gets off a bus and says "cheers drive".

"pacific" - "specific" need I say more? Oh, and unnecessary use of "quotation" marks
Pictures are better than words because some words are big and hard to understand.

Touch base has been mentioned which is certainly the worst phrase.

As per our conversation - when used to start e-mails. Quite an innocent start to an e-mail but used everytime one is sent to me following a conversation, obvious I know, but it would be nice if something different was used sometimes.

    110% it's just impossible.
  • 'roger that' as in military terminology or 'say again' both used all the time by ex brother in law (ex R.M and Falklands veteran) I used to knock about with him so much I ended up using them and still do on occassion!

It's not impossible. Percentages are only a way of expressing fractions, after all; fractions can be bigger than one last time I checked.

"Has that idea been SENSE CHECKED?"
No, I just randomly come up with stuff without thinking about it at all....

"There is no I in Team"
Interestingly the is no I in "Fcuk off you tw4t" either...

    "In my Day"
It's not your day anymore....Make way for the Young people who listen to that modern music.....

Anyone who chops and changes sayings....

A Hull City Player described a game on the radio as a "Bit of a damp Squid" Genius....

"Cheap as Houses" is another favorite... Chips are cheap, Houses are expensive and some people are just a little dumb....

"So, I was thinking in my mind...."

I would guess so, since that would be the main location of the brain. :?
