Creaking Crank

My righthand crank has started creaking when I put pressure on it from about the 2 o'clock position to the bottom of the stroke. As I have little experience in these things could anyone give me a few pointers aas to what I should be looking for?

If you remove the crank and clean the surfaces on both the bottom bracket and the crank it should stop, if it doesn't try some copper ease.
