i'd like to put a sram powerlink on my xtr chain but i'm not to sure where to put it. should i remove the shimano connecter pin and use that location for the powerlink or split the chain elsewhere and leave the connecter pin alone?
cheers

I'd leave it alone until you need it! Keep it in your pocket for the trail.0

i'm going to fit an xt shadow so one of them needs splitting, safer to leave the chain alone and remove the mech cage and fit that way?0

In that case split the chain. Might as well remove the Shimano link for uniformity.0

I fitted a Shadow rear-mech last weekend, and replaced the chain too (with a new HG53 which I'd had for years) fitting a gold Powerlink as I'd used the pin on a friends chain some time ago.
I've not ridden the bike since, but I'm a little concerned that the Powerlink is a little wider than the original Shimano links. I shall be carrying a replacement chain for the next few rides I think!0 -
reckon i'll get the new xt mech as an upgrade over my lx and fit it once i wear out the current chain and cassette, then replace it with maybe a kmc or sram chain. doing it that way there's less risk of ruining a perfectly good chain.0

I went out with the Powerlinked-Shimano chain yesterday for the first time, and all went well. the chain didn't break and the apparent extra width of the link didn't make any real difference.
The new Shadow mech and XT shifter are just so sweet compared to my old Deore units, nice, precise changes unlike the slow lethargic shifts of the older units. If you're holding-off the swap then my advise is don't! Get the new Mech on straight away!0
