Moving to a compact chainset - Tiagra
Just bought a new (2007) Specialized Allez Sport road bike. It has come with a double crankset 52/39t 175mm, but I want to swap the chainrings off for a smaller set (50/34, 50/32 or 50/30???). I run a 12-25 on the back, but live in a real hilly area. (Not interested in a triple.)
Anyone know the cheapest way to do this?
I was thinking of putting them on the classifieds and offering them for a straight swap, but there probably is little chance of someone else looking to swap what I'm looking for, as I'd like them in a new or near to new condition.
If I do need to buy them, can anyone provide a link or suggestion to the cheapest place for a Shimano Tiagra 50 and 34t rings?
Thanks

You can get the 4550 compact for £40 approx and the corresponding BB cups for £15 - you could then sell your existing chainset on Ebay - might make £15-25 for the Chainset & BB.

There's also a new 2008 Sora 9 speed compact chainset for a bit cheaper, though - might find it on Parker's.0 -
£35 for the chainset

Sorry guys, not sure what you mean about the whole cups thing?

Will the new 50/34t 175mm compact chainset not fight right onto the existing bottom brack without having to swap the cups?0

Depends what you've got now.
If it's a new Shimano Chainset with external BBs the new tiagra will fit. If it's an older model with a traditional BB or a 3rd party chainset you'll need the cups for the new tiagra chainset.
If it's an older model Shimano double, you could get an older shimano compact and it'll work.0 -

If that's the bike, you should be ok with getting just the chainset for £35.0 -
That's the very one reddraggon, thanks for the advice, off to spend £35 at Parker International!
BTW, nice avatar - I miss the Lion King!0 -
50/34 combined with your 12/25 will get you up practically all hills.
If you can afford it, go for the 105 instead of the Tiagra.
i just changed from 105 to ultegra sl and the gear changes are so smooth its great.0
