Danbury Common is probably the best local site to ride.
Galleywood common has some good bits but is quite small. You can however ride through to Hylands from here on the bridleways.
Epping has heaps of singletrack but is obviously further away.0 -
Is laindon Hills to far away? Basildon.0

Langdon Hills is South West of Basildon, near the A13/A128 junction.
It's the only place i've done any off-roading in years so can't compare it to anywhere yet but it's certainly got plenty to challenge this beginner.0 -
Have a look at: http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=1
It's part of my ride home from work and stitches together a number of footpaths & bridleways between Dunton and Writtle (with a bit of road as well). Nothing particularly hard core - although the bit from Ingatestone to Writtle is pretty good.

There's plenty of good rides, through Thundersley Glen,(North Benfleet), Dawes Heath & Hadleigh Downs where the 2012 Olympics Mountain Bike event is to be held. My ride is about 12 miles includes wooded single tracks & bridal paths.0

There's some great trails at Danbury and you can get there off road pretty much all the way from Chelmsford. I went for the first time in ages and the effort and work that's been put in is amazing!
When you're there get someone to show you the trails, there's quite a few different routes down, ones like a rollercoaster the others got quite a few nice berms.
Definitely worth a look0 -
