most of the more downhill orientated rims tend to have more spokes than xc wheels so i would simply say from that that the more spokes the more abuse the rim will take, but expect there is a more technical explanation!!Timmo.

Have you read the sticky on wheel strength? Generally 36 are stiffer, but 32 are very stiff and strong. A 32 drilled wheel will take everything you can throw at it (apart from trials due to the large lateral loads) if they are built well and evenly.0

I built myself a new pair of cross country wheels recently for my Enduro and, being a 15 stone rugby second row, went for 36 spokes on XC717 rims, with XT hubs.0
