Nothing wrong with Halfords, unless you are a real bike snob. They are certainly cheaper than most independents and have more choice and some good offers. Both my bikes are from Halfords.
I have a Boardman Urban Pro commuter and last week I bought a Carrera Kraken for £260 with £50 of accessories thrown in. The Subway is a decent commuter.

Get the subway or if you can stretch the budget a little, the Carrera Gryphon (I think its on offer at around 290)

I have a Carrera Fury from Halfords. It is excellent. I would recommend taking it to a proper bike shop for a service (these vary from £20-£30). I did this with mine and it rides like a dream.

Edinburgh bicycle cooperative do some own branded bikes (Revolution) they look good for the money. They do a range of single speed, hub geared, geared, 26" and 700cc bikes all around your budget.

Nowt wrong with the Subways though.
