Pump stuck on valve... ripped the valve off!

So i went to top up my tyres this morning because I thought the pressure was a bit low last time I rode it. Pumped it up fine but when I came to take the pump head off it didn't want to budge. I've had trouble with it sticking before but eventually managed to pull it off. This time I was pulling harder and harder and managed to ripped the valve off the inner tube. :o

Any one else have this problem of not being able to get the pump off? Btw it's a Blackburn Air Tower 4. Is there anything i should do to prevent it sticking? Or is it just faulty?

Also the nut you get on presta valves... should you put that inside the rim or outside? I had it on the outside but I'm thinking if that nut was on the inside the force of me pulling would be on the nut instead of yanking the valve off.

The nut should be on the outside, then again, once your tube is up to pressure it serves no purpose (it's good to push against when there's no air pressure to hold the valve out)

I generally get rid of it once I've inflated as there's always a spare on my spare innertube.

Never had quite such a problem, but most pumps have an adjuster to change the amount of squeeze that's applied when you flick the lever, it's the screw cap bit (the same bit you can remove to get to the rubber seals).

Annoyingly I dropped into my LBS the other day and borrowed their track pump as I'd replaced the innertube on the way in to work, they had a weird "twist" mechanism on their pump instead of the usual lever, I made a right mess of it, got the pump off but in the process took off the little screw down bit on the valve.

The pressure held so to hide my shame I rode home with it like that. Changed the tube again at home - a costly day!
