Hi,

Has anyone tried the Xero XR-Carbon wheelset? I am thinking of buying a set, for my racing road bike. They look very light, but I would love to hear anyone's experience with comfort and performance.

Cheers, Ben

  • Yep I have a set on my Look 486 and I am pretty impressed. My big problem is though this is my first road bike and have nothing to judge them against. But, still they are well made, well finished, light & stiff. These being the main things I would expect from a set of wheels.

    Cheers

    They look very light
Looks are obviously deceptive - claimed 1660g the pair.
  • i looked at these too, they arnt carbon only carbon coated.

The XR-1's are lighter and they had a good review on this website.
  • Thanks for the feedback, I had not realised thet they were carbon coated. Sounds like the XR-1 may be a better option... and cheaper too.

    Cheers, Ben

I'd looked at the XR-1's as recommended, but recently read they were quite flexy...no problem if you're a skinny whippet.

I've just ordered Halo Mercury wheelset for around the same price so will let you know how I get on when they arrive.

I have a set of XR-1s and am very please with them. I've had them for two seasons now with only slight deviation from true, soon fixed with a few tweeks of a spoke key. Just over 1500g so nice and light.
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks

Xero XR-1 are probabaly the best for under £200, but since you were going to spend more than this anyway, I'd get something else. I've had a pair for 2 years - one spoke broke last summer, which was surprising as I'm only about 60kg, although they were getting hammered in training. Yes they are light, but yes they are also a bit flexy - I get quite a bit of brake rub on the rear wheel on hard uphill sprints out the saddle. I'm upgrading mine now for something more expsenive and stiffer.
    Cake makes me happy

agree with those who say the XR-1s and XCR-1s are flexy. light and nippy to accelerate on but they don't inspire much confidence when cornering and feel like rolf harris wobble boards when you get out the saddle.

    stay clear.

for that kind of money i'd much rather have something like the zondas or racing 5s. a bit heavier but much less flexy and better hubs. more stylish too.

I donated my XR1's to my wife who also hates them, and she's a lightweight. She's got another pair of Xeros (same as the XR but different spoke pattern) and isn't too keen on those either. Apart from the flex the standard bearings might be a bit suspect, they're possible the slowest rolling wheels I've ever used.
