hey guys

i need some pedals for the road bike that i will be mainly using for commuting/training (more of an MTBer) I was thinking of the CB quattros because i ve got CB's on the MTB and they look like they would be somewhat easier to walk in, or i could use MTB boots, with the same cleat, in the winter (OK so its from the bike rack into my office which is hardly a marathon but....) i could nt help noticing that the Look Keo classics are a fair bit less and seem to be the traditional choice of the road bike

Any ideas (btw, a certain online bike shop has some pearl izumi shoes, can anyone tell me how they are for size?!)

Cheers

DaveK

Use normal Crank Bros on the road bike. You might have problems clipping an MTB shoe into a Quattro, I had to remove a fair bit of material from the sole of mine to get them to work. If you want to go to a road shoe then you can get a three hole mounting Crank Bros cleat which works perfectly well with normal eggbeaters.

what about if i mention that i have funny shaped feet and thus find it useful to have some sort of platform to put my feet on, i use Candy pedals on the MTB for this reason?!

Staying with what you're happy with seems reasonable - although, if you do fancy a change, SPD SL's provide a nice large platform area and a secure lock down (they do most things reasonably well) - support wise, I prefer the SL's to the Keo's.

Shimano make a road spd with a normal spd cleat, but with a flat platform too. They look like SPD SL but you can walk in the shoes!

hmm, thats an interesting one rob...

its the go with what I know or go with what EVERYONE ELSE know, Looking at pictures i rarely see the CB pedals anywhere, everyone seems to have the shimano/look pedals (i can't tell them apart yet)

If you want to use the same shoes\boots on both bikes then sticking with what you've got already makes good sense.

If you want to try something else and still want to walk around, have a look at Shimano's SPD system. On my commute bike I've a set of PD-M540 pedals that are double sided, so they're easy to use. You could also look at Shimano's A520 or A530 touring pedals as they're a single sided pedal that work well and look good on road bikes. My partner uses A520 pedals on her road bike as she didn't want to go down the full road SPD-SL or Look pedals and cleats.

Most Shimano touring and mtb SPD shoes have the cleat recessed, so you can still walk around quite easily. Other shoe manufacturers have road shoes that support the SPD system, so you can have the best of all worlds with "proper" road shoes as well as mtb shoes.

i'm no novice with clipless pedals btw.......I only use clipless off road for example, so i'm not worried about Easy clip in, ive had enough practice trying to deal with rocks, roots and gravity at the same time tbh (no offence but clipping in on the road bike - crap bike though it may be- is easy)

am i right in thinking this is an impossible question and its as personal as asking for a "good saddle reccomendation"?!

If you've decided to get Looks, don't get the classics... get the Keos. I think the classics will eventually be phased out.

But for road, my reccommendation is speedplay X2 (or the other one that locks the float, which I can't remember the name of ).

I tried crank brothers pedals and don't really find the support all that good. Try Time atacs instead if you want to be able to walk around. Much better engagement than SPD also in my opinion.
