i don't know much about the jackets, but his is what I've found
a lite weight waterproof riding jacket (i have altura one) is good for keeping the rain off but is really hot to ride in
a fleece (i have a jumper) doesn't keep the rain off, but is not as hot to ride in
so i guess that soft shell jackets would be similar to a fleece and much more rider friendly than a thin waterproof one that makes you feel like your inside a boiled in the bag thingwhat are brakes for again0 -
Lots of different types, and often depends on what you are going to put undertneath it. I like to use a layering sytem apporach, which can be chopped and changed depending on conditions.
- Base layer. I always wear a layer that can move sweat away from the skin readily. On hot days I will wear it just by itself, or a football shirt.
- Mid layer. A fleece (have a thin polartec one) and a couple of thicker thermal ones. Depending on temp, will choose between them, or none!
- Outer layer. The jacket. Thin, light, to be worn over other layers. Its job is to keep the wind and rain out, but let sweat vapour through. I don't like getting thicker jackets, as thats the job of the mid layer.
Going with this approach rather than one jacket allows you to tailor you clothes to the conditions, and even remove layers during the ride! There are plenty of lightweight jackets on the market that are wind and rain proof, yet breathable. You may want a drop tail to provide better rear coverage, pit vents to unzip and let air in, rear pockets, and drawstrings. Always go for taped or soniclly welded seams and zips.0 -
As far as jackets go I highly recommend a softshell.
I've got 2 at the moment one of which is a great northface windproof jobby. I've been out riding in -5° wearing just a T-shirt with my softshell.
Softshells are the way forward...Not really active0 -

Was on top of a mountain in the snow on Monday with just this and a base layer, was as snug as a bug in a rug.
Got it from here
