Is there a cheap alternative to buying a box of them for £15? I don't have a soldering iron, so that's not an option.

drop of super glue.
visit your LBS and buy a few."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

buy some cable ends. They cost pence.
it takes a couple of attempts to crimp them on to the cable without destroying them...0 -
LBS, ask for a couple next time you buy something for more than a couple of quid, they'll either give them to you free or charge you a nominal amount (which is why it's worth buying stuff from your LBS when you get the chance). It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
i bought 100 of ebay for a quid, use them all the time.0

£1.99 for 4 cable ends is rubbish! You can probably get a few hundred for that price. And i use cable cutters to crimp them, so generally waste about 4 trying to fix one cable.0

if you crimp them on the handle side of the pivot with cable cutters then you can usually avoid cutting them.0

It isn't fool proof, if you're a fool you can cut the cable with the cutter whilst crimping!0

well that makes me a fool several times over
and explains my unusually short gear cables...0 -
No, i mean, whilst you have the end on the handle side of the pivot you could, if a total muppet, snag the cable with the cutters anywhere and cut that whilst crimping!
