stopping bolts etc rusting

The bolts on derailleurs and stems and other exposed bits of steel (spd springs etc) keep going rusty on my bikes - even on the higher quality items.

How do people keep water and salt away? Do you give them a squirt of WD40/GT85 etc or is there something more sophisticated?

I ride a motorbike so I have similar problems on those. Theres two products you might want to look at.

    Scottoiler FS365

    http://www.scottoiler.com/FS365-Protector.asp

    Or ACF-50

    http://www.acf-50.co.uk/

Both are good, I rate the ACF-50 over the FS365, as the ACF-50 doesnt need constant reapplication, whereas the FS365 does as its water soluable.

The ACF-50 is pretty heavy duty stuff, I dont know how it would cope with a rear mech, I'd be worried it would attract dirt and turn into grinding paste... The FS365 is thiner so that might work better. dont get it near your rims or brake blocks though.

change whatever nults and bolts you can for stainless steel ones. Onther bits you can't change, then keep a thin film of oil/grease on them
Recipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.

I spray a little WD40 into a tin lid and use a small paintbrush to apply to bolt heads etc.
