Can headset cups be removed without a 'headset cup remover' tool? If not, does anyone have one going cheap?

make one? or use an blunt screw driver etc. but be aware that you may damage either the cups and or the frame.

hahaha my local bike shop both removes and installs headsets without using the 'proper' tool... flat screwdriver and a hammer to get em out, and a bit of wood ad an... err hammer to get em back in. just be careful!!!

i got mine off ebay for about 12 quid and it was well worth it, the screw driver is perfectly acceptable if you are careful but for only a few quid i would recommend the right kit.

pfft... its how i do it too, and after they taught me how to do it. frankly so long as your not a complete idiot and know how to use tools, then you cant really screw it up.

bear in mind i have built/rebuilt 6 bikes, it has been well worth the money, one of my headsets is a king so when i wanna put it in a new frame (soon hopefully) i wouldnt want to use a screwdriver to remove it!! :D

As sheepsteeth said - no way I would be knocking my CK out with a screwdriver...

I would get the proper tool, they are inexpensive these days!

    Thanks for all your help....

...I will have a go with a blunt screwdriver or buy the tool if I have no luck...

Or buy the tool, a new headset, and still have an unprepared frame to plug it into.
Is it worth it? A decent LBS will have the correct tools, and face & ream your headtube for about the same price as a rocket tool.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Buy the tool, or find a spec and make one. It's not easy, even with blunt driver to get no marks. Depends if you want to use the old ones or not. I have installed loads with a peice of 2/4 and a mallet though...........
