Difficulty shifting onto the big ring...

Hi Gang

I was out for a ride this morning (absolutely brilliant, sun was out and not a car on the road 8) ) but was having little success in shifting from the small ring up front to the big ring (I have a Shimano 105 double).

A couple of times it went on no problems at all. Unfortunately the majority of times, it just seemed to get stuck in between. I could pedal and shift it back to the small ring, but just couldn't get it to jump up on to the top ring.

Any ideas how I might fix it before heading out again this afternoon (assuming we don't get snowed it!)?

Thanks in advance! :)

Your cable has stretched. Either use the downtube adjuster to take up the tension or unclamp the cable from the mech and pull it through till the slack has gone.

Superstar! I've just tightened the downtube adjuster and it seems to be working fine again (in the workstand at least). Thanks! :D

I had that same problem, was struggling to keep it on the large chainring and constantly using the cable adjuster to tighten it, after a few days the cable snapped so had to get a new one.

So you might be wise to get a new cable before it snaps on you.
  • If the problem returns then I suggest you also check that your RH crankset is not falling off.

As it moves outboard the shifter cannot move across enough.

You can probably check it with a 8mm Allen key.

    Regards

The bike's only a few weeks old, so it's likely to be the new cables being stretched.

It's going in for its first service in a couple of weeks, so I'll get my LBS to give it a thorough going over.
